The Nike advertising slogan never loses its relevance.  As I close the pages of Dave Burgess’ Teach Like a Pirate, I know that it is time to continue pushing myself as an educator and “Just do it”.  The quote from TLAP, “medocrity is incapable of motivating” (147) is a key theme for me as I begin planning for the start of the school year.  I must push myself professionally and move beyond what is deemed “comfortable” in education.

Outside your comfort zone

My focus for the first weeks will connect students with Gardner’s theory on multiple intelligences through direct instruction, exploratory activities and differentiated assignments.  The year will open with a QR code scavenger hunt and a pirate classroom visit.  I plan to continue working for student empowerment over learning, moving 20% time to the next level (Wettrick) in my English classroom.

It is going to be an amazing year of trial, error, reflection and change as I push to make school AMAZING for kids!
